Kombucha vs probiotic supplements

Both are sold as probiotic, but a cold bottle of kombucha and a capsule from the pharmacy are very different things. Here is how we think about them.

What a probiotic supplement is

A probiotic supplement is a capsule, powder or sachet containing selected strains of bacteria or yeast, usually freeze-dried, in a stated amount per dose. It is designed to deliver specific strains consistently, with no flavour and no food around it.

People usually choose a supplement for a particular reason, often on the advice of a doctor or pharmacist, and the strain and dose matter for that purpose.

What probiotic kombucha is

Kombucha is a fermented food. Sweetened tea is fermented by a SCOBY, a living culture of bacteria and yeast, which turns most of the sugar into gentle acidity and natural fizz. Raw, unpasteurised kombucha still carries those live cultures when you drink it.

Because it is made by a living culture rather than a lab, the mix of cultures changes a little from batch to batch, and so does the flavour. That variety is part of the appeal of fermented foods.

The main differences

Cultures: supplements contain a few named strains in measured amounts; kombucha and other ferments contain a natural mix that varies by batch.

Taste and routine: a supplement is something you take; a probiotic drink is something you enjoy, usually instead of soda, juice or an afternoon coffee.

Sugar and calories: supplements have none; a well-made ferment has a little. Our drinks have about 50 kcal and 4.8 g sugar per bottle, far less than most soft drinks.

Storage: many supplements are shelf-stable; raw kombucha and ginger bug sodas must stay cold to keep their cultures alive.

Which one is right for you

They are not really competitors. If you need specific strains for a health reason, a supplement chosen with your doctor or pharmacist is the right tool. If you want to enjoy more fermented food every day, a raw probiotic drink is an easy, delicious habit.

Many people do both. Just remember that a drink is food, not medicine, and nothing here is medical advice.
